AFLATOXIN IN OILSEEDS — CRITICAL COMPLIANCE RISK

Aflatoxin contamination is the most critical food safety risk in oilseed exports — particularly for groundnuts, which are prone to Aspergillus flavus colonisation when harvested or stored under suboptimal moisture and temperature conditions. EU Regulation 1881/2006 sets the aflatoxin B1 limit at 5 ppb (total aflatoxins: 10 ppb) for groundnuts intended for direct consumption. For groundnuts destined for further processing (oil crushing), the limit is higher (10 ppb B1, 15 ppb total) but still strictly monitored at port.
