India is one of the world's largest citrus producers, and its export trade is built on two flagship mandarins: the Nagpur Mandarin from Maharashtra's Vidarbha region — often called the 'Orange City' fruit and a recognised GI product — and the Kinnow mandarin, a high-yielding hybrid grown across Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan. Botanically these are mandarins (loose-skinned, easy-peel) rather than true sweet oranges (Citrus sinensis such as Valencia or Mosambi), and they define India's competitive citrus offering.

The Nagpur Mandarin produces two crops a year — the Mrig bahar (October–January) and the Ambia bahar (March–May) — prized for deep colour, rich aroma, and balanced sweetness-acidity. Kinnow, by contrast, is a winter mandarin (December–March) with very high juice content (45%+), making it the workhorse of both the fresh easy-peel export trade and the citrus juice and concentrate industry.

Indian mandarin exports flow primarily to Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, the GCC (UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar), and Russia/CIS markets, where Indian fruit competes on freight proximity, juice content, and price. The trade rivals Egyptian, South African, and Spanish citrus in these destinations. Phytosanitary certification, degreening/colour development, waxing, and pre-cooling are standard, and a growing share of lower grades feeds juice and concentrate processing.
