Pomegranate

India is one of the world's largest producers and a leading exporter of fresh pomegranate, with Maharashtra (Solapur, Sangli, Nashik, Ahmednagar), Karnataka and Gujarat forming the core growing belt. The flagship export cultivar is Bhagwa (also called Kesar/Sindhuri-type) — a deep saffron-red rind variety with bold, sweet, soft-seeded ruby arils, attractive aril colour and excellent shelf life, making it the benchmark Indian pomegranate in global markets.

Indian pomegranate carries strong provenance credentials, including the GI-tagged Solapur Pomegranate, and is cultivated under a flexible bahar (flowering) management system — Ambe, Mrig and Hasta bahar — that allows growers to schedule harvests and supply fruit across much of the year. For export, fruit is selected for size, uniform deep-red colour, blemish-free rind and high aril count, then graded, foam-netted and packed into vented telescopic cartons for reefer shipment.

The key destinations are the Gulf (UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman) and the European Union (Netherlands, Germany, UK), with growing volumes to Russia and Bangladesh. EU access is governed by strict Maximum Residue Limits, and the single biggest production risk is bacterial blight (Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. punicae), the 'oily spot' disease, alongside Anar (fruit) borer and Telya — requiring disciplined orchard management and residue monitoring for Bhagwa to clear EU and Gulf phytosanitary checks.

India is a global leader in fresh pomegranate exports, built on the Bhagwa cultivar's deep-red soft-seeded arils and a year-round bahar supply system. The Gulf is the volume mainstay while the EU is the high-value frontier, gated by strict MRLs and the persistent threat of bacterial blight.
