Apples (Malus domestica) are India's flagship temperate fruit, cultivated almost entirely in the Himalayan belt — Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand — where cold winters and high-altitude orchards deliver the chilling hours apple trees require. India is among the world's largest apple producers (2.5+ million tonnes annually), with Kashmir alone contributing over 75% of national output. The dominant export varieties are Red Delicious, Royal Delicious, Golden Delicious, and increasingly colour-strain and high-density clones.

Unlike India's tropical fruit exports, the Indian apple trade is shaped by a dual reality: India is a very large producer but consumes the overwhelming majority of its crop domestically, and it also imports premium apples from Washington State, Chile, and New Zealand to meet high-end urban demand. The export opportunity therefore centres on Kashmiri and Himachal apples moving to price-sensitive neighbouring and Gulf markets where Indian fruit is competitive on freshness, freight, and price rather than to Western retail.

Indian apple exports flow primarily to Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, and the GCC (UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar). Controlled-atmosphere (CA) cold storage in Sopore, Shopian, and Shimla now allows year-round dispatch, smoothing the September–November harvest peak. Phytosanitary certification and pre-cooling are mandatory; the trade competes against USA, Chile, China, and New Zealand fruit in every destination market.
