About IR-64 Parboiled Rice
IR-64 Parboiled Rice is a long-grain non-basmati rice variety that undergoes hydrothermal processing — a controlled soaking and steaming of the paddy before milling — which gelatinises the starch, hardens the grain, and locks in nutrients from the bran layer. The result is a rice that cooks with firm, separate grains, resists overcooking, and has a significantly longer shelf life than raw white rice.
The grain profile maintains the standard IR-64 length of 5.8–6.2 mm, but the parboiling process alters the physical structure and colour profile.
