About Opal
Opal is a hydrated, amorphous form of silica (SiO2·nH2O) containing 3–21% water. Precious opal displays a distinctive 'play-of-colour' — flashes of spectral colour caused by the diffraction of light through its microscopic silica sphere structure. Common (potch) opal lacks this effect. Opal has a Mohs hardness of about 5.5–6.5 and ranges from white and crystal opal to black opal, fire opal, and Ethiopian (Welo) opal.
The finest precious opal originates in Australia (black opal from Lightning Ridge) and Ethiopia (Welo). India does not mine significant precious opal but is a leading cutting and cabochon hub — Jaipur lapidaries shape imported rough into calibrated cabochons, beads, and doublets for jewellery markets.
