About Pearl
Pearl is an organic gem produced within the soft tissue of living molluscs, composed of nacre — concentric layers of aragonite (calcium carbonate) and conchiolin. Unlike mineral gemstones, pearls require no cutting; their value lies in lustre, nacre quality, shape, size, colour, and surface cleanliness. Pearls are soft, with a Mohs hardness of only about 2.5–4.5.
Pearls divide into freshwater (cultured in mussels, predominantly China) and saltwater types — Akoya (Japan/China), Tahitian black (French Polynesia), and South Sea (Australia, Indonesia, Philippines). Natural pearls are extremely rare; almost all commercial pearls today are cultured.
