Poppy seed — known in India as khus-khus or posto — is the tiny, kidney-shaped culinary seed harvested from the opium poppy plant (Papaver somniferum). Although it comes from the same plant as opium, the mature seed itself is free of significant narcotic alkaloids and is a prized culinary ingredient used as a thickener, garnish, and nutty-flavoured base across South Asian, European, and Middle Eastern cuisines. India produces the white (cream-coloured) variety favoured in Indian cooking, distinct from the blue/grey European baking poppy seed.

Crucially, India is one of the very few countries in the world LICENSED by the International Narcotics Control Board to legally cultivate opium poppy, and all poppy seed cultivation is tightly regulated by the Central Bureau of Narcotics (CBN) under the Narcotics Department, Ministry of Finance. Licensed cultivation is concentrated in designated tracts of Madhya Pradesh (Mandsaur, Neemuch), Rajasthan (Chittorgarh, Pratapgarh), and Uttar Pradesh (Barabanki). Every kilogram entering the export trade is sourced from this legal, CBN-regulated supply chain with full documentation and traceability — a compliance advantage no grey-market origin can match.

Indian white poppy seed is valued for its clean cream-white colour, sweet nutty flavour, and high oil content (typically 44–50%), making it ideal for grinding into pastes that thicken and enrich curries (Bengali posto, Mughlai korma) as well as for confectionery, breads, and the nutritional supplement trade. While Turkey, the Czech Republic, the Netherlands, and Spain supply the global blue/grey baking-grade market, India is the dominant origin for premium white culinary poppy seed and the only fully licensed, narcotics-controlled legal supply for buyers who require auditable provenance.
