India is the world's largest exporter of pickling gherkins (mini cucumbers) — a position it has held for over a decade, accounting for roughly 15% of global gherkin trade by value and supplying more than 60 countries. Gherkins are grown almost entirely under contract farming across Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Tamil Nadu, where the climate allows two main cropping cycles a year and gives small farmers a reliable cash crop tied directly to processor demand.

The Indian gherkin industry is built around vertical integration: exporters supply seed, agronomy and buy-back guarantees, harvest the immature 3–9 cm fruit by hand, and process it within hours into acetic-acid or brine preservation. Product leaves India in two main forms — bulk preserved gherkins in 280kg HDPE barrels (semi-finished, re-packed by importers in the EU and USA) and ready-to-eat retail jars in vinegar, sweet or dill cure. Fresh slicing/salad cucumber is a smaller but growing line served mainly into the Gulf and regional South Asian markets.

Gherkins fall under two distinct customs lines: fresh cucumbers and gherkins under HS 0707.00, and prepared/preserved gherkins in vinegar or acetic acid under HS 2001.10 — the dominant export code. The EU (Germany, France, Belgium, Spain), the USA, Russia and Japan together absorb the bulk of Indian output, with importers valuing India for low landed cost, consistent calibre grading and the scale that no other origin can match.
