Curry leaves are the aromatic, glossy green leaves of Murraya koenigii, a small tropical tree of the Rutaceae (citrus) family native to the Indian subcontinent. Despite the name, they are unrelated to 'curry powder' — instead they impart a distinctive, slightly citrusy, nutty aroma when tempered in hot oil, and are a foundational seasoning across South Indian, Sri Lankan and South-East Asian cuisines. They are used both fresh, for their volatile aroma, and dried or powdered, for shelf-stable bulk supply.

South India dominates global curry leaf production, with Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Kerala forming the core cultivation belt. India is the principal export origin, and demand is driven overwhelmingly by the large South Asian diaspora across the Gulf, North America, the UK and Australia, for whom fresh curry leaves are an irreplaceable everyday ingredient. There is no significant rival exporting origin — India effectively controls the global trade.

The product splits into two distinct logistics streams. Fresh curry leaves are highly perishable and require cold-chain handling and air-freight to reach overseas markets within days, commanding premium prices in diaspora retail. Dried whole leaves and curry leaf powder are shelf-stable, travel as bulk ocean cargo, and serve the food-manufacturing, seasoning-blend and nutraceutical sectors — the latter valuing the leaf for its carbazole alkaloids and essential oils used in herbal and Ayurvedic formulations.
