About Chana Dal
Chana Dal is the split, dehusked form of the desi (brown) chickpea (Cicer arietinum) — the small, dark, irregular Bengal gram variety native to the Indian subcontinent. When the whole desi chickpea is milled, its dark seed coat is removed and the cotyledon is split into two golden-yellow halves, yielding the dense, nutty-flavoured dal that anchors everyday South Asian cooking. Distinct from the larger pale Kabuli chickpea eaten whole, desi-derived chana dal is prized for its high protein, low glycaemic index and rapid digestibility.
India is the world's largest producer and consumer of chickpeas, growing 11–12 million MT annually as a Rabi crop concentrated in Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Karnataka. Despite this dominance, India also imports desi chickpea — chiefly from Australia — to bridge domestic milling demand. Chana dal carries roughly 22–24% protein and is the raw material not only for cooked dal but for besan (gram flour), the foundation of countless snacks, batters and sweets across the diaspora food economy.
Globally, chana dal trades in tiers defined by milling quality and polish: premium machine-cleaned, double-polished split for branded diaspora retail; standard split for foodservice and besan milling; and lower grades carrying higher broken and admixture for bulk processing. India differentiates on the authentic desi chickpea base, deep milling capacity, enormous besan-linked demand and unmatched diaspora brand loyalty against rival origins such as Australia and Myanmar.
Compliance & Quality Standards for UK
Post-Brexit, the United Kingdom operates a fully independent food import regime separate from EU rules. All food products entering Great Britain must meet UK Food Standards Agency (FSA) requirements, and importers must notify the UK government via the Import of Products, Animals, Food and Feed System (IPAFFS) before shipment arrives. IndianXporter prepares all UK-specific phytosanitary certificates endorsed by India's Plant Quarantine authority and ensures compliance with UK Maximum Residue Levels (MRLs), which have been updated since Brexit. HMRC import declarations are filed under the Customs Declaration Service (CDS). Organic products require UK Organic certification through a UKAS-accredited body. We provide fully bilingual (English) commercial invoices compliant with HMRC commodity codes under the UK Global Tariff schedule. At IndianXporter, we ensure every batch of chana dal exceeds the quality expectations of UK importers and adheres to all local regulatory mandates.

What Drives Chana Dal Pricing
Before quoting UK buyers, we track the same factors that move global chana dal FOB rates:
- India Rabi chickpea crop in Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Rajasthan — the primary supply driver
- Australian desi chickpea harvest and India's import tariff policy — bridges domestic milling shortfalls
- Minimum Support Price (MSP) and government buffer-stock operations for gram in India
- Besan demand cycle — festival and wedding-season snack production lifts split chickpea offtake
- USD/INR exchange rate — INR depreciation improves Indian FOB competitiveness

India vs Australia: Chana Dal Sourcing Comparison
India is the world's largest chickpea producer, consumer and miller, while Australia is the leading desi chickpea exporter and India's own key import source. India edges Australia on milling depth, besan-linked demand and diaspora brand trust, while Australia holds an edge in consistent large-bore desi quality and counter-seasonal supply.
